Before commencing Salt Holdings CIC, Derek was the founder of the Email a Prisoner Service and former CEO of Prison Technology Services. The Email a Prisoner Service enables prisoners’ families to maintain healthy ties utilising email communication in a safe and secure manner.
He commenced the business in 2003 although it wasn’t accepted until 2006. Today the Email a Prisoner service is available in 99% of UK prisons and secure establishments. Many correctional facilities continue to express their interest in the services and, has already expanded to cover Holland, Australia and South Africa. As the service expands additional services were born. Including Secure Payment Services and Telecommunication Options.
In 2015, Email-a-Prisoner was the overall winner at the Digital Leaders 100 Awards and also won the Best Citizens Service Application. Derek still has an advisory role in the business he founded.
In 2016 together with the Unilink Technology Group
Derek was instrumental in winning the Queens Award for Business Innovation.
Director – Sharon Rouse
Sharon is one of the founder members of the Home Office National Steering Group (for assisting offenders into Enterprise) and the Parc Supporting Families Forum (working with the families of prisoners serving their sentence in HMP & YOI Parc). She is a former director of Cultural Fusion Wales (an innovative youth music project working with disengaged young people), the South West Wales Business Ladies Network and for Business Network International (BNI) covering South Wales. She is also the former Vice Chair of the West Wales Business Women’s Network.
In 2006 the DTI Small Business Service named Sharon the “Women of Enterprise” ambassador for Wales where she took part in their national promotional campaign to raise awareness of female entrepreneurship.
In 2011 Sharon became a “UK Female Entrepreneur” ambassador campaigning to inspire women of all ages to become entrepreneurs and to set up their own businesses.
Non-Executive Director NigeI Billam – IT Specialist
Nigel is a Website developer and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) specialist with 45 years experience in IT. He spent 23 years working for ICL (International Computers Limited the UK equivalent of IBM). Providing IT Support and Technology & Services for both Local and National Government including The NHS, Major Banks and other National Institutions and Utility Companies.
He is the CEO of Webjoy – and has run his own company for 17 years. Currently he manages over 50 websites for small and medium sized companies.
As well as website design and management he is also a Google SEO expert. He has advised many small businesses on setting up websites and surviving in the internet world.
Nigel says his greatest single achievement to date on the Internet is operationsmokestorm.com which is in use nationwide within 1000’s of Junior and Secondary schools and users. The website employs multimedia video technology. It is an award winning online learning delivery system for The National Curriculum and in particular the PSHE element (Personal Social Health Education.)
